“You’re not disabled by the disabilities you have, you are able by the abilities you have”

Oscar Pistorius was born on 22 November 1986 in in South Africa with congenital absence of the fibula in both legs. When he was 11 months old, his legs were amputated halfway between his knees and ankles. He attended High School where, between the ages of 11 and 13, he played rugby, water polo and tennis. When Pistorius was 15, his mother died after having an allergic reaction to medication.

After a serious rugby knee injury, he was introduced to running in January 2004 while undergoing rehabilitation, and “never looked back”.

Pistorius is studying  business management with sports science: in june 2008 interviewed by his University’s website, he joked: “I won’t graduate soon. With all the training I have had to cut down on my subjects. Hopefully I’ll finish by the time I’m 30!” His sporting motto is: “You’re not disabled by the disabilities you have, you are able by the abilities you have”.

Prophets of our time: Brother Roger of Taizé

20 11 2008

In this post you will find added the letter that I wrote to my friends and to the brothers of the Community of Taizè the day after the death (August, 16, 2005) of br. Roger of Taizè.

In my life, I have been very lucky beacuse I had the opportunity to spend almost 1 year in Taizè as a volunteer, between 1996 and 1997: so, I had the possibility to pray with him, to listen to his meditation and even to…drink hot chocolate with him!

The letter is in italian. For all the people who are not familiar with my mother language, I recommend to visit the Taizé Website: you will find there all the informations (in your own language) about a person that I consider a “prophet of our time”.
